Deep Roots

The Ontario Golf Superintendents' Association (OGSA) is an Association made up of golf course superintendents, assistant superintendents,
golf course suppliers, owners and architects.

The OGSA was formed in 1924 to benefit the superintendent in Ontario. Its main purpose is to provide up-to-date information on the needs
and problems facing the superintendent and to elevate the status of the profession to benefit all members.

The OGSA works to accomplish this with a trade magazine published four times per year called Green is Beautiful, monthly general information
flyers and an educational seminar held every fall with Golf Course Superintendents Association of America. We host our own Golf Course Management
Conference and Trade Show held every winter, usually in January. There are also informal meetings and golf tournaments held throughout the year. We also provide our
membership with an up-to-date membership roster.

President’s Message
Winter 2011

I would like to wish all members a very happy and prosperous 2011.  Who knows what the season has in store for us this year, but I’m sure if history is our lesson, we as turf managers will have many challenges and rewards to look forward to.

The 2011 version of the OGSA Golf Course Management Conference & Trade show wrapped up on Jan.14th at Caesars Windsor.  This year’s show as everyone knows was for the first time held outside of downtown Toronto.  Despite the snowy weather the show was a great success.  Those delegates who attended are still submitting positive comments in regards to the show.  I believe the numbers speak for themselves. Over 300 registered delegates and almost 100 vendors were present for the 3 days in Windsor. The number of full conference registered delegates was the highest we have seen in a number of years.  All of the special events were very well attended and the education session space needed to be expanded to accommodate the delegates.  The IPM seminars were the hottest ticket during the show, and the session with Teri Yamada and Brenda Nailor gave the delegates a hands-on look at what they needed to know and execute in order to have a successful annual IPM report.

Socially, the absolute hands-down winner was the fabulous visit to the Canadian Club Branding Center (Hiram Walkers Distillery).  Those who attended were toured through the very historic original site of the Hiram Walker and Sons head offices and company Bank. Tours included the rooms where Al Capone came and negotiated the purchase of 25,000 cases per week of Canadian Club Whiskey during the days of prohibition in the U.S.  The evening was topped off by a professional Whiskey tasting event enjoyed by all.

Looking ahead to 2011 your board of directors will be busy organizing and facilitating the arrangement of a strategy for the IPM public meeting requirements.  The goal is to have a template that can be used by all members when dealing with the public for the purpose of the IPM program.  I recommend to all of our members that you try and get involved with your association in any way that you can. Whether that be by submitting an article for Green is Beautiful, participating in golf outings or volunteering to sit on committees. The more involved you are the better your awareness of current challenges.

On the topic of challenges, the 2010 season was a very severe year for many of us throughout the province. If I could make one observation that seems to hold true time after time, when faced with damage or problems, always show your club that you are engaged in action to respond to the challenges that we face. Pick up the phone and seek advice from your fellow superintendent members.  We collectively are the biggest wealth of knowledge.  Be vocal and transparent.  Your club will always be on your side if you engage them from the start.

I look forward to serving you, the members, as President for 2011.  If you need assistance, have concerns or need information regarding the association make no hesitation in calling me anytime.  Let’ look for a great start to the 2011 season.  Cheers!
